Kate Tryhorn

Expert Communication Support Rooted in 30 Years of Child Development

Description

Kate brings a unique, holistic perspective to Speech and Language Therapy in Edinburgh. Having begun her career as an NNEB-qualified nursery nurse before qualifying as a therapist in 1998, she possesses a deep, practical understanding of how children learn, play, and grow. She specializes in creating "brave spaces" where children feel regulated, understood, and empowered to communicate.

Clinical Specialisms
Kate provides expert intervention for children and young adults across a broad spectrum of needs:

  • Neurodiversity-Affirming Autism Support: A strengths-based approach focusing on emotional regulation and sensory profiles rather than "compliance."
  • Gestalt Language Processing (GLP): Specialist trained in the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) framework for children who communicate through scripting or delayed echolalia.
  • Early Intervention: Supporting "late talkers" by identifying the specific sensory and structural strategies needed to unlock their first words.
  • Speech & Language Development: Targeted support for speech sound disorders and complex language delays.

The Collaborative Approach
Kate believes that therapy is most effective when it empowers the "team" around the child. Her sessions are:

  • Play-Based & Creative: High-energy, engaging activities that keep children regulated and motivated.
  • Strategy-Led: Providing parents and school staff with clear, actionable advice to support the child in their natural environment.
  • Holistic: Looking beyond just "speech" to consider the child’s emotional and sensory well-being.

Experience & Credentials

  • 30+ Years of Experience: Spanning the NHS and over 15 years in private practice.
  • Education: BSc in Speech and Language Therapy (University of Reading, 1998).
  • Specialist Training: Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) for Gestalt Language Processing.
  • Professional Registrations: Fully registered with the HCPC and RCSLT.

"My goal is to work alongside families to find the unique 'key' that unlocks a child’s communication, ensuring therapy is a joyful, affirming part of their week."
