Waiting for a formal SEND assessment is one of the most stressful and uncertain experiences a parent can face. With NHS waiting times stretching to two years or more in many parts of England, families are left to navigate school, daily life and mounting concerns without the support a diagnosis can unlock.
This guide brings together everything UK parents need to know — from understanding the diagnostic process to getting school support now, building your evidence and looking after your own wellbeing while you wait.

Browse SpecialistsNo. Schools in England have a legal duty under the SEND Code of Practice to support pupils with special educational needs regardless of whether a formal diagnosis exists. Speak to the SENCO about SEN Support and reasonable adjustments — these should not depend on a diagnosis.
NHS waiting times vary significantly by region and condition. In many parts of England, families wait 18 months to 3 years for an autism or ADHD assessment. Waiting times for other assessments (speech therapy, occupational therapy) also vary. Your local SENDIASS service can advise on typical wait times in your area.
Private assessments are significantly faster (often within weeks) but can cost between £800 and £3,000. Schools and local authorities must give serious consideration to private reports. If you remain on the NHS waiting list at the same time, a private assessment does not remove your place in the queue. The right choice depends on your child's urgency and your financial situation.
An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legally binding document that specifies the support your child is entitled to in education. It is appropriate for children with significant and complex needs that cannot be met through standard SEN Support. You can request an EHCP needs assessment from your local authority at any time — a formal diagnosis is not required to make this request.
The wait is genuinely hard on parents. Connecting with other families through local parent carer forums, national charities like Contact, or online communities can help enormously. Your GP can refer you for talking therapies if you are struggling significantly. SENDIASS services can also provide emotional support alongside practical advice.
The SEND List makes it easier for UK families to find qualified specialists — from educational psychologists to occupational therapists — who can help before, during and after a diagnosis.
