NHS Occupational Therapy Waiting Times for Children (2026)

NHS children’s occupational therapy (OT) supports sensory processing, motor skills and everyday tasks like dressing, writing and self-care. It is one of the harder services to pin a wait time on, because the figures are not collected in one place — but here is what the available data shows.

How long is the NHS OT waiting list?

There is no national paediatric OT waiting-time figure published centrally, which is part of the problem — it makes waits hard to compare and hold to account. Individual trusts report waits ranging from around six months up to 18 months or more (one North East trust reported up to 39 weeks in 2025). A realistic national range is 6 to 18 months. The Nuffield Trust has flagged community therapy services, including OT, as facing serious capacity pressure. Compare OT with other services on our NHS waiting times estimator.

Why is there no clear national figure?

Community OT is commissioned locally and reported inconsistently, so your local Integrated Care Board is the best source for current waits in your area. For why this varies so much, see why NHS waiting times vary by area.

What can I do while I wait?

Schools can put practical adjustments in place under SEN Support without waiting for an OT report. Some families choose a private OT assessment to get sensory or motor needs understood sooner; our cost calculator shows realistic ranges and our private OT guide explains what is included. You can find a verified OT or read how to get OT faster.
